Introduction: Me sort of...

  • My name is Stoffel Strange
  • I was born in Arlington, Texas, on November 11, 1993
  • I am a junior at OU
  • I am majoring in Biochemistry
  • I do research on the south campus for Dr. Charles Rice
  • I volunteer at Norman Regional Hospital every Wednesday night from six to nine P.M.
  • I played basketball in high school and still enjoy playing at the huff in my spare time
  • I have two cats (pictured below) named Velma and Annie; they are both about ten months old
  • I like to sit around with my cats and watch netflix. Even though I’ve seen every episode a million times, I still cannot get enough of The Office
  • After graduation, I plan to attend pharmacy school but I haven't decided where yet

I don't really like to talk about myself so I'm just going to filibuster the rest of this blog post by telling you that while I'm writing this I'm watching college basketball. Connecticut is playing against Cincinnati in Connecticut. Neither team is ranked in the AP Top 25, but both teams have enough quality and seniority on their team to make it to the dance in March. Actually, the game just ended and Connecticut won 62-56. Their senior star Ryan Boatright had 18 points and 8 assists. Now I'm turning on Kentucky (the number one team in the nation) at Texas A&M and Texas A&M is actually winning. After Alex Robinson just scored he put the Aggies up 28-17 but there is still a lot of time left (5:15 in the first half). Im excited later today to watch the New England Patriots play the Baltimore Ravens. I don’t really care for either team but I enjoy watching most sports in general. This is now 300 words long. yay!

  1. So what would you say is your favorite fable, or series, as of right now? You have quite a few posts surrounding Ovid's Metamorphosis and other stories featuring animals as the protagonists.

What made you want to take this class (and the online section no less)? What is your fascination with fables, or is there another type of story that you are interested in? Epics maybe?

I'm going to have to opt out of talking about basketball, or mainstream sports in general. I don't know anything about them haha! Have you ever seen televised fencing (sword fighting) though?

  2. That's really cool that you're majoring in Biochemistry. One of my friends is majoring in it too and she really likes it. I absolutely love cuddling with my dog and watching Netflix too! It's probably one of my favorite things haha. I honestly have no idea what you were talking about in your sports section haha. What made you want to be a pharmacist?

  3. Stoffel!!! Somehow I did not get around to reading your Introduction until now, but seeing Velma and Annie here is like running into old friends at this point, ha ha. And I know something about that Kentucky-A&M game; my husband is an Aggie and even though I did not watch that game, he kept shouting me the highlights from the other room while he watched it. I'm trying to get through Introduction today and I know you have something in the Project stack which I will get back to you by the end of the week... I am looking forward to seeing what you want to do with those great Greek myths! :-)

  4. Hi Stoffel, it is nice to meet you. It is really interesting that you do research at OU for Dr. Charles Rice. Research is a great way to learn new things. Also, I am glad to hear that you volunteer at the hospital. Volunteers really can help people out. Your cats are adorable. I wish I was not allergic to cats. Just like you, I enjoy Netflix. I liked how your introduction was bullet pointed since most people used paragraphs, very unique.

  5. Hi Stoffel! Very cool that you're a biochem major! I'm microbiology, so obviously not the same, but I do spend a lot of time learning about the biochemistry of different prokaryotes. What kind of research are you doing right now? I'd love to hear about it. I haven't had the opportunity to do much research in microbiology, but I am planning on doing research while in medical school next year. Have already seen pictures of Velma and Annie, they are so cute!

  6. Great introduction. I too am a Netflix junkie, for me though my addiction is the original series that appear on there. I just finished Marco Polo if you have time one day you should check out it. Well it is great to meet you and good luck on the rest of the semester.

  7. Stoffel! I hope you've thoroughly enjoyed the class thus far. I've enjoyed your bullet point facts and play-by-play of games that took place a month ago... Good taste in shows, seeing as Michael Scott is a legend. Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed the ravens losing to the patriots in that game- and enjoyed watching the patriots (somehow) pull out a V for the Super Bowl!

  8. Hello there, Stoffel! First off, I just want to tell you that I liked that you made a list of things about yourself. I wish I had thought of that! Way to be, majoring in Biochemistry and whatnot. I have a lot of respect for you for choosing to pursue that. Good luck with the rest of your college career! I look forward to reading more of your material!

  9. That's cool that you want to keep things concise: it's just like a chemist to do that! It really sounds like you have your priorities sorted out, which is a saving grace for a lot of people (I know of seniors who still don't know what they want to do!). Also, your cats are adorable! They seem really content, and it's apparent that they get well taken care of!

  10. I loved your introduction post. The bullets made it easy to know exactly what you wanted to tell us about yourself. I also love netflix. I only started watching the office the last couple of season so I made it a point to binge watch all the season before the last season was on television. I loved that show and I was so sad when they ended it. Well, good luck with the rest of the semester!

  11. I like your name and how you filled up your three hundred words. I must admit that I searched you on Facebook to see if Stoffel Strange is in fact your real name. It is. We may have even had a class together. I'm a chemical biosciences major. Good luck with pharmacy! I'm headed off to dental school this summer, so I know how crazy application time can be. Hope you enjoy it!

  12. Hi, Stoffel. It's nice to meet you. You've got a name I've never heard before and I couldn't help wondering where it comes from. By that I mean the country or culture it comes from. It's certainly not a name you hear very often where I come from. I also played basketball when I was younger. It's been a loooong time since I've played, at least like three years. I know that Kentucky's men's basketball team is still currently undefeated, so I'm pretty sure they made an exciting comeback during the game you were watching over a month ago. Bet that was a fun one to see!

  13. Hey! I love the name. Guess what! I was born in Fort Worth and my grandmother lives in Arlington. I return to Texas almost every weekend to see my family. I think it is really great that you volunteer on a consistent basis. I love community service and do a lot with my sorority. I have seen the office once but I did not really feel the need to see it again. Anyways, I think you are doing great things at OU. Keep up the good work.

  14. Oooh, biochemistry and pharmacy. I took a History of Science, Medicine and Technology (Pre 1750) class and it was one of the most interesting things I have ever learned about. I also love cats and netflix. I only have one cat and one dog, and the cat is a butt hole to the dog...bites his butt when he's trying to beg for food, it's really quite funny because the dog could eat him in one bite, but he's got him fooling into thinking he's untouchable. Cats are awesome :)

  15. Stoffel,

I enjoyed reading a bit about your life. It's cool that you're doing research with Dr. Rice…he seems like a cool guy! What are you working on? Glad to know another SLSRCer.

Pharmacy school sounds interesting. Are you thinking of doing research, or just going straight into being a pharmacist? It seems like the business is going to be outsourced a bit to mechanization so research may be a safer path.

Your cats are awesome. I grew up having two cats and wish they were still alive. My grandma just got two Maine Coons and they're huge!

  16. Hello again, Stoffel! First off, I love the text in your sidebar that's labeled Meow. . . I kind of feel like a website or blog cannot consider itself part of the online culture unless it has a cat reference or cat picture--or, better yet, a cat video, lol. That's awesome that you are both doing research and volunteering at the hospital! I can only imagine how amazing those experiences must be. Can't wait to learn more about you through your other blog posts this semester!

  17. For starters, what a unique name! I have a bit of an unusual name myself so some people always pronounce it wrong (though I don’t know how, it’s the name of a country). I mentioned in your other post about your major in biochemistry. I’m sure that’s so demanding but worth it (hopefully). I’m glad you have cats as well; it seems a lot of people in this class have cats. YES. The more the merrier.

  18. Hey Stoffel, what time of research do you do on campus? I always think that getting involved with research while still an undergraduate is a great idea! I hope you're enjoying that research. I wish I could have cats, but I'm allergic--your two cats are adorable though! Wow, it's great that you volunteer every Wednesday! I think volunteering is so great

  19. Hey Stoffel, nice to meet you! What sort of research do you do on south campus? I'm working with CCEW this semester and our project is with a researcher that does his research on the south campus as well! I'm an economics major so research for me isn't quite the same, but I've always been interested in doing research of my own. I also appreciate your cat obsession. I'm currently in the process of trying to talk my mom into letting me get one when I move in to my new house next year. She's a veterinarian so she's pretty against pets in college, but I'm gonna see what I can do!

  20. Hey! I did research with Dr. Rybenkov my freshman year when I was a biochem major, so I’m pretty well acquainted with south campus! And it’s kind of funny, I actually just finished working for the Auxiliary department at Norman Regional every weekend as a fill in for the volunteers. What area do you volunteer in? Also, your cats are super cute! I’m hoping to get one when I move to graduate school so I have a companion!
